You unbox a candle that smells like a perfume counter in a warm room. Twelve months later, same wax, same wick, and the first burn gives you a ghost of that first impression. Nobody tells you the scent was never parked in the jar. It was moving the whole time, and it kept moving while you weren't watching.
The First Note Is the First to Leave
Fragrance oil is a fractionated blend, and its top notes are the lightest molecules in it. Linalool, limonene, linalyl acetate. Those are exactly the compounds a nose reads as fresh or bright, and they have the highest vapor pressure of the lot. That means they evaporate first, whether the wax is lit or not. An unopened jar at 25C still sheds surface aroma into the headspace above the wick. Quality control on a production lot puts a measurable floor on this. The difference between a lot sampled at manufacture and the same lot pulled at nine months is often twenty to thirty percent on the top-note fraction. Your nose simply has no baseline to compare against, so it files the loss as this candle peaked. It was not a peak problem. It was an evaporation problem.
Heat, Light, Humidity. Three Drivers, Three Thresholds
Each one is cheaper to control than you think, and each has a number worth remembering.
- Temperature. Below 27C the wax stays a stable matrix and the fragrance esters hold. Push it past 30C in a closed car or a summer pantry and the wax softens, molecules migrate to the surface, and heat-driven ester breakdown starts. A candle that separated in a hot month. Oil pooling, a soft skin on top. Has already lost more throw than time alone would take.
- Light. UV breaks the double bonds in fragrance esters and shifts them toward oxidized, green, off-notes. Store the sealed jar away from windows. A dark cabinet at the same temperature reliably outperforms a bright shelf, because the light is an independent driver, not a side effect of the heat.
- Relative humidity. Above sixty percent RH the headspace water activity climbs, the wax surface absorbs moisture, and a wick starts wicking water instead of fuel. That is the quiet killer of the first burn. The eighteen to twenty-four C, under fifty percent RH window is the number that repeats across soy, paraffin and coconut-blend QA sheets.
Store to the Spec, Not to the Season
- Seal the lid. A jar stored with the lid ajar sheds top notes measurably faster than a sealed one.
- Stand it upright. Laid on its side, the wax headspace surface area doubles and the evaporation area doubles with it.
- Keep it out of the garage and the warmest corner of the pantry if you can. A cool closet is closer to spec than just a dry room.
- Stop waiting for the fourteen-day cure to do the work. Curing bonds fragrance into the wax. It does not extend shelf life. A well-cured candle still fades on a shelf. It just starts fading from a higher, more stable baseline.
Scent in a jar is perishable. Buy to a production date, store to the eighteen to twenty-four C, under fifty percent RH window, and light the ones you love first. Jars cured before shipment and stored to spec are on the Lyxu range.
